The History of Gilroy
During the War of 1812, the North West Company sent an armed merchantman ship to take over Fort Astoria, a trading post in present day Washington state. While docked in Monterey Bay, John Gilroy was left ashore and made his was north to the present day Gilroy area. Eventually he became the first non-Spanish settler in Alta California to be legally recognized by the Spanish crown.
Gilroy was incorporated in 1870 following the 1848 annexation of California and was named for John Gilroy who had died the previous year. Cattle ranching and timber from the local mountains were important for the new cities economy however the town's primary source of income was from agriculture as was the same for the entire Silicon Valley. A decade later the city began to evolve into a bedroom communities for the technology centered Silicon Valley to its north.
